Stay Alert: How to Protect Yourself from Online Fraud and Scams

Online shopping, social media, and email make everyday life more convenient than ever. Unfortunately, scammers know this too. Fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to trick consumers into sharing personal information, credit card numbers, and banking details. At Altabank, we want to help you stay informed and protect yourself from common online scams.

Be Careful When Shopping Through Social Media

Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook have become popular places for businesses to advertise products and promotions. While many of these ads are legitimate, scammers are increasingly using fake ads and copycat websites to steal payment information from unsuspecting shoppers.

A common tactic is creating an ad that looks like it belongs to a trusted brand. When users click the link, they are taken to a fake website designed to mimic the real company. The site may look convincing, but once you enter your credit card information, scammers can capture your data.

One of the biggest warning signs is a deal that seems unusually cheap or unrealistic. If a price looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Before making a purchase through a social media ad, take a moment to check the website address carefully. Look at the URL and make sure it exactly matches the legitimate company’s website. Scammers often use addresses that are slightly misspelled or include extra words and characters.

When in doubt, avoid clicking the ad altogether. Instead, open your browser and type the company’s official website directly into the address bar. Taking this extra step can help protect your financial information.

Watch for Email Scams and Phishing Attempts

Email fraud, also known as phishing, remains one of the most common ways scammers target consumers. These emails often appear to come from trusted companies, financial institutions, shipping providers, or even friends and family members.

Scammers may use alarming language to create urgency and pressure you into acting quickly. For example, an email might claim your account has been locked, a payment failed, or suspicious activity has been detected. The message then encourages you to click a link immediately to “verify” your information.

Before clicking any links in an email, stop and examine the sender’s address carefully. Does the domain match the company it claims to represent? Fraudulent emails often come from suspicious or slightly altered domains that may look similar to legitimate ones.

If an email creates panic, pressure, or urgency, treat it with caution. Legitimate companies generally will not pressure you to provide sensitive information through email links, and banks will never ask for sensitive information over email.

Instead of clicking the link, visit the company’s website directly through your browser or contact the organization using a trusted phone number.

Simple Habits Can Help Protect Your Information

Online scams continue to evolve, but staying cautious and informed can go a long way in protecting your finances and personal information. Always verify website addresses, avoid suspicious links, and think twice before responding to urgent messages online.

At Altabank, we are committed to helping our customers stay safe from fraud. A few extra seconds of caution today can help prevent major problems tomorrow.
